Outfits during the Late Winter Outfit Rut
What I've been wearing and some new closet acquisitions.
Writing to you from rainy Los Angeles, on my couch while I watch the Grammy’s Red Carpet. I love watching the fashion during award show season because it gives me something exciting to look forward to while I’m in my late winter outfit rut. I’m feeling super discombobulated with my shopping and what I’m looking for as we head into spring. What I can tell you for sure: I’m really trying to go for more vintage pieces, styling outside of my comfort zone, and filling some closet gaps (things I really need, ie: a good event heel, a more versatile skirt, trousers).
All that to say, here’s what I've been wearing as I brave the winter outfit rut.
A coffee meeting
Gravitating toward my vintage pieces a lot lately. This vintage DKNY chocolate suede jacket was a score from last year. I found it online for less than $30. I see similar and exact jackets from time to time on Depop, Poshmark, and Ebay, so don’t give up! The tee was from my latest Rose Bowl haul: a vintage graphic tee from a spot in Big Bear, CA. The jeans are vintage Levi’s, which you’ll see a lot throughout this newsletter, because they’re my favorite piece to wear when I’m not in the mood to dress myself. Loving these Lu Goldie sunglasses.
For the LA rain storms
I just got these clogs as my designated rain shoe. I’ve never resonated with typical rain boots and these felt better suited for my personal style. So far, I’m loving them! They’re so comfortable, under $100, and look unique. Obsessed with my new butter yellow phone case.
Dressed for a cocktail party and dinner
I busted out this beautiful Facette tuxedo blazer for a fancy evening in Hollywood. Wore a satin brown bra (unlinkable, sorry), with this tank. I did this statement belt with the Khaite Abigail jeans- quite honestly, I don’t know if I’m loving these. Beware that they are extremely narrow in the thigh area. A few bones to pick with Khaite jeans in general, which are a combination of: not being able to sit in them, the entire exhausting process of finding the right size, and once you do, there is still some oddness in terms of fit (for me, at least). But.. they did look great in this pic!
A casual, every day bag
A couple years ago, we made custom L.L. Bean (medium-sized) totes for Starling and I’ve used it as a casual work bag since then. I wanted to get another tote that is well-suited to use as an every day, grab-and-go bag (think: pilates, errands, quick bite to eat, the beach, packable for vacation etc). I decided to go for the small size and opt for a single initial in my preferred font they offer: thin script. My “G” is in the color dark brown. It’s the perfect size- fits just enough.
To an event, in something other than vintage Levi’s
When I referenced going out of my comfort zone, I meant going for pieces and sets such as this. I’m so glad I picked up this set from the Friends with Frank new season collection. I almost played it safe with a pants option, and I’m so glad I went for this look. It will be available at Teller Shop in LA. The bag is a vintage suede number from the 40’s.
My shoes of choice
I know you’ve seen me post these 1000x, so I’ll keep this brief. Jamie Haller loafers are all I have been wearing. I kept my true size (a 38, I’m a true 7.5) I because I like them feeling a little more relaxed on my foot.
To a doctor appt
Leggings that I adore (best fabric, they are nice and thick), cashmere scarf, Soft Goat cashmere crewneck, New Balance 990v2 (that are usually sold out, but sometimes can be found directly on the NB site. I’ve heard through the grapevine!).
During the LA winter heat wave
As I grasped for any sort of variation in my outfit rotation, the temperature hit 75 and sunny in LA. I had just ordered this polka-dot dress and it was the perfect thing to sport during the heat wave. Really leaned into the off-white tones and paired with this JK cardigan (code: Gabriella15) and these buttery loafers (code: Gabs15).
How are you all doing? Would love to hear any requests on what you’d like to see here in the comments! As we inch toward Valentine’s Day, check out my Day of Love gift guide.
